Updates on the Missouri Paid Sick Leave Act

Last fall, Missouri voters approved Proposition A, which increased the minimum wage to $13.75 per hour, effective Jan. 1, 2025, (with future increases every year) and requires employers to provide one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, effective May 1, 2025.

Credit unions are reminded that the law also requires employers to provide current employees with a written notice about earned paid sick leave on April 15, 2025. After that date, future hires must be provided the written notice within 14 calendar days of their commencement of employment.

The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations released a sample of the paid sick leave notice, which can be found here.

The law requires that the written notice be provided to each employee on a single piece of paper, at least 8.5” by 11”, in no less than 14-point font. Please note that employers must also display a poster with the required notice in a conspicuous and accessible place in each establishment where their employees work.

Legal Challenges

As you may have heard, legal challenges to the law are underway. On March 12, the Missouri Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the constitutionality of Proposition A. We hope the court will provide a ruling before the May 1 compliance date.

The Missouri legislature is also in the process of challenging the paid sick leave law. On March 13, the Missouri House passed House Bill 567, which would repeal the Missouri paid sick leave requirements in Proposition A. House Bill 567 now goes to the Missouri Senate.

Cornerstone League will keep credit unions updated on this developing area. Until then, we suggest that credit unions plan to comply with Proposition A as passed by the voters.
