Last week, Texas Credit Union Association Executive Director Jessica Karlsruher and Grassroots and PAC Director April Mobley coordinated a targeted fly-in with America’s Credit Unions. This event enabled credit union leaders to visit with members of the House Ways and Means Committee in hopes of continuing the protection of the credit union tax status.
Texas credit union leaders in attendance included:
The group met with Rep. Nathaniel Moran (R-District 1) and staff from Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-District 37), Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-District 24), and Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-District 19). We also visited staff from the office of Sen. John Cornyn (R) and newly elected Rep. Craig Goldman (R-District 97).
Feedback from the lawmakers’ offices assured the group that, although credit unions appeared on a comprehensive list of options that Ways and Means Chairman Arrington and his committee were reviewing, there was no specific discussion about taking
away the credit union tax-exempt status.
Most of the discussion focused on the benefits of credit unions, specifically access to loans and our financial literacy programs. The resounding response from the visits with our Texas delegation is that they intend to protect credit unions to the best of their abilities and focus on where there is a need for urgent cuts and reforms.
