Cornerstone League has learned that Bob Thurman, retired chief executive officer of Credit Union of America, has passed away.
Thurman was passionate about the credit union movement and dedicated his entire career to it. He began his tenure at Credit Union of America as a loan officer in 1975 and was promoted to office manager and assistant manager before being named CEO in 1981. He
was fortunate to work with John Michener, the credit union’s founder, for several years, and he loved to tell stories about sharing an office with him. Thurman served as the CEO for 37 years before his retirement in 2018.
In his commitment to advancing credit unions, he served on many committees and organization boards, including Millenium Corporate Credit Union and the Kansas Credit Union Association. In 1992, the Kansas Credit Union Association awarded him Professional of the Year, and in 2018, the Heartland Credit Union Association inducted him into its Hall of Fame.
We at Cornerstone League send our heartfelt condolences to Bob Thurman’s friends, family, and former colleagues.
