On May 25, 2024, a severe tornado tore through Gainesville, Texas, causing extensive damage to the community and leaving many homes destroyed. Among those affected was 4U Credit Union Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Christa Crisp, who faced the loss of her home and significant damage to her family's property.

“The tornado ripped through our home, leaving it completely destroyed and tearing off the entire roof,” Crisp said. “The roof even crushed my husband’s truck, totaling it as well.”

In the aftermath of the storm, Crisp and her family managed to salvage some belongings and rented two storage units to keep what they could save. They have since moved into a rental house while waiting for the rebuilding process to begin. However, the journey to recovery has been challenging, particularly as they navigate the complexities of being underinsured.

“It’s been a tough, drawn-out process as we had to demolish the old house and wait for the rebuild to start,” Crisp said. “Receiving Cornerstone Foundation’s $1,000 Phase 1 grant was a lifeline, and we’re so appreciative. The funds were crucial in helping us set up the essentials in our temporary home.”

The Cornerstone Foundation's Disaster Relief Grant program aims to provide immediate financial support to credit union staff and volunteers affected by unforeseen disasters. The Phase 1 grant offers up to $1,000 to assist with immediate needs, such as temporary housing, repairs, and essential items. Crisp's story is a testament to how these grants make a significant impact during times of crisis.

Grant Eligibility and Process

Credit union staff and volunteers in the Cornerstone region can apply for grants to cover out-of-pocket expenses for primary residences or vehicles. The two-phase process includes Phase I for immediate relief needs and Phase II for additional significant needs.
