The El Paso Chapter of Credit Unions recently held its first reality fair for students from the Young Women’s Leadership Academy using the Cornerstone Foundation’s BALANCED Life Reality Fair kit.
The chapter’s board and volunteers from various credit unions came together to give girls from grades 6–11 a taste of adult life.
Yolanda Moreno, branch manager for One Source Federal Credit Union, reported that the girls were handed a document with a real-life scenario (husband/wife, child, jobs, and monthly income) and asked to visit all the booths, each representing realistic life scenarios, such as housing, childcare, technology, entertainment, and transportation.
“They had to choose what they needed instead of what they wanted and were surprised at how much thought was required and how many sacrifices their parents/guardians made monthly,” Moreno said. “The feedback and the interaction were amazing because these young ladies learned so much.”
Several young ladies shared their experiences and were rewarded with a gift card. All the attendees received a small snack bag with chips, candy, granola bars, and a juice box.
