In keeping with its mission, the Cornerstone Foundation offers a two-phase Disaster Relief Grant program to assist credit union staff and volunteers in recovering from unforeseen disasters. This initiative embodies the credit union philosophy of "people helping people," providing vital support when needed.
One notable beneficiary is Ben Smith, VP of business intelligence with Communication Federal Credit Union in Oklahoma City. When softball-sized hail totaled his roof in April 2023, the disaster relief grant bridged the gap between insurance coverage and his deductible.
“The Cornerstone Disaster Relief grant made a significant impact on my family at a time when we needed it the most,” Smith explained. “Our roof was totaled by softball-sized hail, and the type of insurance we had left a wide gap between coverage and our deductible. The grant helped us cover the expenses of our deductible and assisted in being able to have our roof replaced in a timely manner to avoid further water damage. The kindness extended to us by the Cornerstone Foundation will never be forgotten.”
Credit union staff and volunteers in the Cornerstone region can apply for grants to cover out-of-pocket expenses for primary residences or vehicles. The two-phase process includes Phase I for immediate relief needs and Phase II for additional significant needs.
