The 1-to-1Woman Mentoring Program, sponsored by the American Association of Credit Union Leagues, paired nine female Caucasian executives from credit union leagues and foundations with nine rising female African American professionals.
Shellee Mitchell, president of Sapphire Dimension and founder of the program, emphasized its value and encouraged mentors and mentees to learn from each other. She acknowledged that people tend to mentor those who resemble themselves, but African Americans are underrepresented in the credit union movement. The 1-to-1Woman Mentoring Program aims to foster conversations between mentors and mentees regarding gender bias and racial disparities in the workforce.
