The Texas Governmental Affairs Conference kicked off in Austin Tuesday with a group photo of credit union attendees and Gov. Greg Abbott. The GAC wrapped up Wednesday afternoon after credit union advocates had visited close to 50 legislative offices in the Capitol.

Credit union leaders requested support from lawmakers for several bills considered high priority, including SB 1464 by Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas, District 23), which prohibits a car dealer from denying a sale to a consumer who wants to use outside financing. Support was also asked for bills to address the issue with debt cancellation agreements and indirect lending, the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, and an extension of two years for sunset review of our regulator.

Rep. Stan Lambert (R-Abilene, District 71) authored the sunset legislation in 2021 and spoke at the GAC’s evening reception. Lambert lauded the Credit Union Department as one of the best-run agencies the Sunset Commission had ever reviewed.

Harvey Kronberg of the Quorum Report, a nonpartisan publication covering state politics and government from an insider's perspective, gave his view of the legislative session’s priorities and personalities.
