Five long-time directors of Space City Credit Union were honored recently with lifetime scholarship awards. Each scholarship in their name will be awarded annually through Space City Charities in the amount of $2,500. Space City Charities has awarded more than $250,000 since its inception in 2010.

The scholarship awards are:

  • The Buck M. Lay Jr. Scholarship (director since 1975)
  • The Robert E. Sander Scholarship (director since 1979)
  • The Jerry M. Garcia Scholarship (retired director since 1980)
  • The Judith A. Langford Scholarship (director since 1982)
  • The Stephen A. Hines Scholarship (director since 1986)

Two directors preceded this group in receiving this honor, Verna Wolf and Buddy Holcombe.

Space City Charities was formed in part to honor Verna Wolf, who served 40 years on the board before retiring. The Verna Wolf Scholarship is awarded annually over a four-year period for a total of $10,000. The Buddy Holcombe Scholarship is an annual award of $2,500.

Craig Rohden, CEO of Space City CU and President of Space City Charities, said, “We wanted to honor these great individuals for their outstanding service, leadership, and selfless volunteerism, not just with a one-time recognition, but with an award that will live for eternity. We will recognize each director every year during our annual fundraiser and relive a small piece of their outstanding contributions, not only to Space City, but to our society as a whole.”
