Last week, Cornerstone League hosted a group of 18 credit union professionals from Kenya, Africa, as they connected with their American counterparts in the Dallas area. The members of the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations visited the League’s Plano office, Resource One Credit Union, American Airlines Credit Union, and Lone Star Credit Union.
“It is so gratifying to see our collective work in action because this is the heart of what we do—the driving force behind our everyday actions,” said Cornerstone League President/CEO Caroline Willard. “By coming together and sharing insights, we improve our practices, fortify our resolve, and ultimately strengthen the cooperative movement.”
The idea of a cultural exchange inspired a warm friendship ceremony where each group offered something native to their locale. The Kenyans offered to wrap a new American friend in a Shuka (a colorful, red-patterned cloth known as the “African blanket”), and the Texans offered to place a cowboy hat on their heads in return.
After attending the Advocacy 101 session during the Cornerstone YP Conference, one delegate shared that he really valued learning about credit union advocacy.
“American credit unions seem to be
really good at advocacy,” he said. “By collaborating and unifying one’s
message, there is more power and strength in the message.”
