Texas Trust Credit Union is partnering with Paul Quinn College, America’s first Urban Work College, to create a memorial scholarship fund in honor of Miriam Johnson. The scholarship will provide $10,000 in scholarships to the college annually.

With the first installment from the fund, 14 Paul Quinn College students were awarded scholarships from $500 to $2,000 to be used for tuition and fees for the spring 2021 semester. Students were selected for the scholarship based on their demonstrated potential to become outstanding leaders.

“We are deeply appreciative of Texas Trust for investing in the lives of our students,” said Dr. Michael J. Sorrell, president, Paul Quinn College. “Our students are being challenged to address the most pertinent challenges of our time. This investment by Texas Trust opens the door for their opportunities to match their ambitions.”

The Miriam Johnson Scholarship will be awarded to deserving students on an annual basis. The scholarship honors the late Johnson, who was the wife of Texas Trust board member Joe Johnson and was a strong proponent of higher education. She graduated from Gillespie School of Nursing and became a licensed practical nurse during the height of the Civil Rights Movement.

“Paul Quinn College’s focus of preparing students to be servant leaders aligns with the ‘people helping people’ philosophy of Texas Trust,” said Ginia Chapline, COO of Texas Trust Credit Union and chairperson of the Texas Trust Gives Foundation. “This scholarship will help those students lay the groundwork upon which they can build a brighter financial future.”

About Paul Quinn College
Paul Quinn College, one of the most celebrated colleges in the country, is a private, faith-based, four-year, liberal arts-inspired college that was founded on April 4, 1872, by a group of African Methodist Episcopal Church preachers in Austin, Texas. The school’s original purpose was to educate freed slaves and their offspring. Today, we proudly educate students of all races and socio-economic classes under the banner of our institutional ethos, WE over Me. Our mission is to provide a quality, faith-based education that addresses the academic, social, and Christian development of students. Under President Sorrell’s leadership, Paul Quinn has become one of the most innovative and respected small colleges in the nation and now serves as a model for urban higher education. Fortune magazine recognized President Sorrell’s work and the College’s transformation by naming him one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders. President Sorrell is also a three-time award winner of HBCU Male President of the Year by HBCU Digest and was named by Time magazine as one of the “31 People Changing the South.”
