It’s never too early to learn financial literacy. Kay Swan, president of the Ward County Credit Union, embraces this notion by teaching children in her community about the basics about financial literacy.

Once a week, Swan teaches primary and secondary students at Transformative Leadership Academy how to monitor budgets and spending, using a traditional banking registry. She advises students on money and spending goals as they go through a simulation of the TLA Store and Credit Union.

“Giving children the building blocks to financial literacy is an important life skill that is often overlooked,” said Swan, also a member of the Monahans Chamber of Commerce. “I applaud Transformative Leadership Academy for its holistic approach to education and helping students grow up to be productive members of the community.”

The nonprofit, independent school serves students ages 3-18 and seeks to deliver transformative and inclusive educational opportunities through project-based learning.

“We are so thankful for our partnership with WCCU for career advising and internship opportunities for our students,” said Lindsey Balderaz, director of TLA.“ The guidance WCCU shares with the students is not only beneficial in the short-term, but also has a lasting, beneficial impact on the students and the community at large.”
