The Cornerstone Foundation steps in to support credit unions within its region when the expected happens, such as severe storms, tornadoes, fires, wind, hail, or floods. Using its disaster relief fund, the Foundation is able to help credit union staff and volunteers get back on their feet.

In response to Hurricane Laura, AMOCO Federal Credit Union, based in Texas City, Texas, donated $10,000 to assist with relief efforts. “The Foundation was there for us after Hurricane Harvey, and now it’s time for us to lend a hand to our neighbors in Southwest Louisiana,” said Tina Foster, EVP of administration for AMOCO FCU. “This donation can’t replace everything, but we certainly hope it will provide some relief to those impacted.

Houston based-Primeway Federal Credit Union also donated to the Hurricane Laura relief efforts. Primeway FCU President and CEO Annette Zimmerman explains, “Natural disasters can destroy, in hours, what it took a lifetime to build, decimating communities both physically and mentally. By donating, we hope to support the ever-resilient credit union community spirit as they begin the process of rebuilding.”

As a way to give back for all the support its staff has received in disaster relief over the years, Gulf Credit Union in Groves, Texas, also donated to the relief efforts earlier in the year.

Donate to support disaster relief efforts
So far this year, the Cornerstone Foundation has awarded $150,000 in disaster relief grants, helping support 19 credit unions in their time of need, and it disbursed $173,170 in disaster relief grants in 2019.

“It is through the charitable support from the credit union community that the Cornerstone Foundation is able to make such an impact,” said Cornerstone Foundation Executive Director Courtney Moran. “We are committed to the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people,’ and that’s why we stand ready to support credit union communities when disasters strike.”

Consider donating to the disaster relief fund to help the Foundation prepare for future disasters. One way to do this is through the Cooking with Cornerstone cookbook, which will be available for presale starting Oct. 26. The cookbook will be ready by the first of December and will make great holiday gifts for staff, board members, family, and friends. All proceeds will support the general disaster relief fund. Moran also urges anyone who is interested and able to donate directly to the disaster relief fund, by visiting and selecting donate now or by texting cornerstonedisaster to 44321.
