Selina MendezNetworking. We hear about it constantly, whether at conferences, the workplace, or through colleagues, to name a few. Everyone emphasizes how important it is—oh, and never forget your business cards! As a young professional it can be a little overwhelming at first.

The reality is that networking is essential to building a rewarding career. It goes beyond connecting with colleagues, opening new doors, and providing access to resources and opportunities. Networking in the credit union industry provides valuable insights into what other credit unions are experiencing.

“It’s good to have extra support outside of my organization,” said Tricia Ramos, compliance and fraud manager at Priority Trust Credit Union. “We are all experiencing the same challenges, and we don’t have to do it alone.”

Networking also allows experienced employees and young professionals to swap ideas and get hands-on advice to help improve the way members are served.

“Networking has helped me connect with people that I can reach out to for help when issues arise,” said Ramos.

Young professionals can catapult their career growth through networking. Below are a few of the benefits of networking:

  • Gain Industry Insights: Connect with seasoned colleagues to learn about their unique experiences in the credit union industry, like member services, compliance, lending, and business operations.
  • Create a Support System: Networking creates a community of like-minded colleagues who also share the same value of “people helping people.”
  • Garner Mentorship Opportunities: Having a mentor can guide you in many ways throughout your career and your overall growth. Mentorships can be a great source for advice and provide new and different perspectives.
  • Open Doors: Networking opens doors to job opportunities and projects and increases your visibility in the industry.
  • Develop Essential Skills: Networking events and discussions can enhance your communication and interpersonal skills, so get out of your comfort zone and go to networking events.

A great resource for networking with other young professionals is registering to be a Credit Union Young Professional (CUYP). As a CUYP, you gain valuable connections to impact your career in meaningful ways. Engage with colleagues via our online YP community, in-person and virtual events, social media, and the annual Young Professionals Conference.
