You Can Help Pro-CU Candidates via the National Advocacy Fund
Friday, October 14, 2016 7:00 AM

With an historic election just around the corner, credit unions are once again being asked to support the CUNA/AACUL National Advocacy Fund. The Cornerstone Credit Union League’s “fair share” goal for 2016 is $191,024, and we are calling on all credit unions to help us get there.

What's It All About?
The National Advocacy Fund was launched in late 2013 to help Credit Union National Association and the leagues take advantage of unique political opportunities, such as close elections where a credit union champion needs a little boost to get across the finish line or in races where we have a chance to vote out a representative or senator that has been hostile to credit unions.

Since inception, the Fund has been used to help numerous pro-credit union candidates across the country. These funds can support political and electoral activities such as partisan communications to credit union members and Get Out the Vote (GOTV) activities aimed toward assisting pro-credit union candidates.

Examples of additional support include direct mail costs associated with partisan communications (direct mail sent by credit unions to their members advocating the election of a pro-credit union candidate); political research (i.e., polling) to inform partisan communications campaigns and CULAC independent expenditures; and candidate photo shoots and GOTV campaigns directed at credit union members.

You might consider the Fund as a political venture capital fund to pool credit union resources from across the nation and invest them where the impact of electing credit union champions is greatest.

Charles Rutan, CEO at Southwest Airlines FCU headquartered in Dallas, supports the Fund wholeheartedly. "The political and regulatory landscape is complex and growing more so all the time," Rutan said. "That's why I'm passionate about credit union advocacy. For the industry to continue, achieve success, and grow our membership, we must differentiate ourselves. Through its targeted bipartisan efforts to reach and support credit union-friendly candidates, the National Advocacy Fund can ensure that our objectives are met, now and in the future."

Unlike CULAC, CUNA's federal PAC for which contributions must be personal only, contributions to the National Advocacy Fund may come from state- and federally chartered credit unions, leagues, CUSOs, and other credit union vendors.

Contributions may be made via check or ACH. Checks should be payable to: “CUNA National Advocacy Fund” and mailed to the attention of Gretchen Ziegler, Cornerstone Credit Union League, 4455 LBJ Freeway, Suite 1100, Farmers Branch,  Texas 75244.

Be sure to include your contribution form, which you can download here.
