After a full buffet breakfast, Texas Credit Union League (TCUL) President and CEO Dick Ensweiler and Tom Haider, executive vice president of advocacy, kicked off TCUL’s Texas Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) with the legislative briefing. The jam-packed menu featured Representatives Mike Villarreal (D-San Antonio) and Dan Flynn (R-Van), along with Harold Feeney, commissioner of the Texas Credit Union Department, and Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst.

One of the highlights of the morning was Lt. Gov. Dewhurst's pronouncement that as long as he was in office, the tax exemption credit unions enjoy would continue. Lt. Gov. Dewhurst has been a staunch supporter of credit unions in Texas, and it looks like he will continue to be.

The other highlight of day one was a special recognition proclamation that Rep. Flynn presented to Jeff Huffman, TCUL’s vice president of governmental affairs, for his years of valuable and ethical service as a lobbyist.

Capping off the morning was Haider's legislative briefing. In preparation for the capitol visits that would take place in the afternoon.  Haider and his panel of experts that included Huffman and Suzanne Yashewski, senior vice president of regulatory compliance and legal affairs, gave a more in-depth rundown of the eight primary issues that we are currently watching in the 83rd Legislature.

The afternoon was filled with visits to the Capitol, where conference attendees met with elected officials and their staffs to discuss credit unions, the “credit union difference,” and those all-important legislative issues. These face-to-face meetings remind lawmakers how important credit unions are to Texas, since so many of their constituents are credit union members, and they help keep credit unions and the issues we care about front and center.

The Texas GAC is being held in conjunction with TCUL's Member Meeting & Expo. The conference runs through Friday.
