Western Sun FCU Gets Creative; Implements Successful 'Choose My Wish' Initiative
Wednesday, August 28, 2013 5:45 AM

When you don’t have a big budget for a community outreach program, you have to get creative, and that’s exactly what Western Sun FCU (Broken Arrow, Okla.) did. They came up with “Choose My Wish” and the goal was to help smaller organizations, schools and charities in need.

According Western Sun FCU’s Dana Harris, the credit union wanted the communities that it serves to know that the credit union was interested in helping them continue to serve those in need.

“We established a website called and representatives from charitable organizations and schools could ask for something they needed for a cause they were passionate about,” explains Harris. “We just wanted to make a difference.”

Harris said several teachers posted on the site and asked for items they desperately needed for their classroom. An Animal shelter asked for ID machines and used computers.

Nine people from the credit served on the voting committee, with at least one from each branch location. The credit union received 43 unique entries and was able to make three wishes come true for charities that were not even on the credit union’s radar.

The credit union, Harris said, promoted Choose My wish on its web site, and also tagged all of their radio spots for a planned loan campaign with a 10 second mini commercial driving people to

For their efforts, the Cornerstone Credit Union League awarded Western Sun FCU with a first place award in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award $100-$200 million in assets category. The credit union’s entry was sent to CUNA to compete in the national competition.
