Leaders at Ward County Credit Union in Monahans, Texas, hosted a special meeting with five financial institutions that met with Congressman Will Hurd (District 23), State Sen. Charles Perry (District 28), and State Rep. Brooks Landgraf (District 81).

The financial contingent of three banks and two credit unions participated in a special group discussion with lawmakers, and afterward the meeting was opened up to a community-wide town hall.

Ward County Credit Union President Kay Rankin-Swan noted that because of the mixed group of financial concerns, the group picked two topics they could all support and ask for action on—data security and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. They asked Hurd to cosponsor HR 3048 by Roger Williams (R-Austin), which would reduce the unending CFPB regulations on credit unions and community banks.

The Cornerstone League, along with Credit Union National Association and the Community Bankers Associations from Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, has been working on HR 3048 with Congressman Williams. The bill cosponsors from the Cornerstone states are Kenny Marchant of Texas, Frank Lucas and Tom Cole of Oklahoma, and French Hill of Arkansas.

Rankin-Swan said Congressman Hurd suggested he could be a champion for credit unions on these issues. He was interested in the fact that his colleague, Congressman Randy Neugebauer (District 19), is the sponsor for the Data Security Act, HR 2205. The bill, supported by the Cornerstone League and CUNA, already has 16 co-sponsors. Hurd also appreciated that friends on both sides of the political aisle could come together with a concern and a solution.

Cornerstone President and CEO Dick Ensweiler said, "I appreciate the work of all the credit union leaders who took time to hold meetings with members of Congress during the August recess on these important bills. I hope all Cornerstone League credit unions will urge their members of Congress to cosponsor HR 3048 and HR 2205."
