Board Succession - Planning for Your Success
Karen Houston-Johnson, CU Resources, Inc.

Your Board of Directors is an essential component in the equation for success at your organization. You plan the strategic direction of your organization and the succession of your CEO, but do you plan for the succession of board members?  This is a very new area for most boards. Not a lot of them have developed formal plans for board member succession.

This session will:

  • Answer your questions regarding the importance of having a succession plan for board members and how to do it while maintaining the integrity of your election process.
  • Discuss the challenges that other credit unions have experienced due to a lack of succession planning.
  • Learn about the three phases of board contribution – learning, lifting, and leaving, and where your board fits on the Contribution Curve.
  • Describe what a competency is and how you determine which competencies you should be looking for on your board.
  • Reveal a unique option for board member succession successfully used by some of your organization peers.
  • Discuss the role of the Nominating Committee, and what an effective vetting process looks like.
  • Share with you a brief board self-assessment that will help determine where your board needs to concentrate its efforts when it comes to succession planning.
  • Answer any questions you have about board member succession planning.
