A Higher Purpose: Why Credit Unions are Different than Banks

What makes us different than banks? We can say it’s our not-for-profit status, or that we’re co-operatively owned and democratically controlled. But it is something much more than that. It is because we make our work a higher purpose. Credit Unions need profit and capital, but that isn’t why we exist. We exist to serve. That is fundamentally different than the purpose of banks. And our members trust us because of it.
This inspirational presentation shares principles lying behind successful organizations. We are a movement steeped in the knowledge that to do WELL, we must do GOOD. Tim will delve into the deeper processes at work here. He gives examples of some of America’s thriving companies, showing how doing GOOD pays off for all stakeholders. Tim incorporates discoveries from Quantum Physics to explain why the world works this way and shares empirical proof that there is more to this equation than meets the eye. He emphasizes that success in credit unions results from maintaining high moral and ethical values, from giving members more than they paid for and by keeping a clear focus and understanding the truth of situations. When credit unions live by a “Higher Purpose”, the winners are the employees, the credit union itself, and most importantly, the members.
About Tim Harrington
Exploding the stereotype of his profession, Tim Harrington is a Certified Public Accountant and a dynamic public speaker. Tim has that rare ability to make complex subjects very simple. As an expert in the field of credit unions, he has consulted with and provided training for hundreds of credit unions and tens of thousands of credit union volunteers and staff members throughout the United States.
Since 1996, Tim has been President of T.E.A.M. Resources, a firm which provides consulting, strategic planning, and training to credit unions from coast-to-coast. TEAM Resources' clients range from a few million in assets to the billions in assets.
Tim was formerly the Chairman of the Board of a $150 million credit union in Tucson, Arizona. Tim was appointed to the Board of this troubled credit union in 2001 and served until 2006. During his time on the Board, the credit union evolved from losing over $2,000,000 per year to becoming the strong and profitable financial institution today.
Tim was formerly an Associate Partner with the nation's 3rd largest auditor of credit unions. Mr. Harrington has been working with credit unions since 1989 when he directed the Internal Audit of a large credit union in Tucson, Arizona. Prior to that, he was with a national accounting firm and has been practicing accounting and consulting since 1980.
Because of his knowledge, wit and unpretentious delivery, Tim is a much sought after speaker in the credit union movement. Tim has made presentations for many national credit union organizations and NCUA, as well as for the credit union leagues in forty-five states. In addition, Tim is on the faculty of the CUNA "CU Finance for Non-Financial Managers and Volunteers" School.
Tucson, Arizona has been home since 1980. Tim is a native of Montana and holds a BBA in Accounting from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.
