Vacancy in Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District Appears Likely
Tuesday, August 22, 2017 7:05 AM

It appears Oklahoma’s 1st district Congressman Jim Bridenstine will give up his seat to take the reins of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Trump Administration insiders say the appointment will come early next month.

In office since 2013, Bridenstine is a former active-duty U.S. Navy pilot who publicly sought the position and was widely reported to be the frontrunner even weeks before President Donald Trump's inauguration. Bridenstine has been a leader in fashioning legislation to boost manned exploration.

The impending resignation will force a special election in the Tulsa area district. Five Republican candidates have already announced their intentions to run. To date, no Democrats have expressed plans to campaign for the seat that in recent years has been deemed "safe Republican."
