Unity One CU Named Best Company to Work For in Texas
Thursday, March 21, 2013 7:05 AM

Unity One CU, the oldest credit union in Texas, was spotlighted this week for employee satisfaction.  The Best Companies Group selected Unity One CU as one of the Best Companies to Work for in Texas, and the credit union was recognized during an awards dinner in Austin March 19.

Companies were evaluated on employee survey comments in eight core areas: leadership and planning, corporate culture and communications, role satisfaction, work environment, relationship with supervisor, training and development, pay and benefits and overall engagement.

According to CEO Gary Williams, Unity One CU scored exceptionally high on strategic planning, fair compensation, flexibility, cross-training and an attractive package of benefits.

“This honor confirms that when you hire the right people and try to reward them personally, professionally and financially great things can happen,” Williams says.

Gina Ledesma, Unity One CU senior member service officer, celebrated her 10-year anniversary this month. She was hired as a teller at 18 and, since then, has worked in various capacities such as a receptionist; call center representative and collections officer. Ledesma feels that her familiarity with different aspects of the credit union operation prepared her for her current role.

“Unity One gives qualified employees the opportunity to move up instead of being overlooked, and I’m grateful for that,” she said.

Unity One CU’s 64 employees operate its four Fort Worth, two St. Paul, Minn. and one Kansas City, KS branches. Although, the Best Places award was based only on the credit union’s Texas operations, St. Paul Branch Manager Craig Hart agrees “wholeheartedly” with the comments his Texas coworkers made.

“We manage to be relaxed yet productive. This culture does not change even if the states do,” Hart says.

Ranked #7 in size among credit unions in the Fort Worth area by the Fort Worth Business Press, Unity One CU experienced notable gains in new members in 2011 and 2012 and hopes to continue the trend in 2013, as it celebrates its 86th anniversary.

For Unity One employees—this year will be full of celebration, according to Williams.

“I very much appreciate the honor, but I give our staff all the credit for making Unity One CU a great place to work,” he said.
