Houston Business Journal Best Places to Work

It’s no secret that credit unions are ranked amongst the best financial institutions, but several Houston area credit unions have also been given the distinction of Best Places to Work. United Community Credit Union, based in East Houston, was named to this list for the first time in 2014.

The award, issued by the Houston Business Journal, honors top employers for their unique workplace cultures, amenities, benefits, and worker-retention and attraction strategies. Once a company is nominated, the employees complete a detailed survey allowing them to rate their employer on these key aspects.

"It is an honor to be selected as one of the Best Places to Work," says Jamie Philley, assistant vice president of human resources at United Community. "Our management team works really hard to make sure that our employees feel valued and that they enjoy coming to work each day."

According to survey results, things that set United Community apart included:

  • Excellent Benefits:  United Community offers a top-tier benefits package, which includes a very competitive 401K plan and a lucrative PTO buy-back program.
  • Social Engagement:  The credit union offers an abundance of employee social activities, such as TopGolf, Softball, Volleyball, and a rewards-based employee volunteerism program.
  • Senior Management:  The senior management team at United Community, led by CEO Joe Harwell, ranked extremely high on parts of the survey that dealt with the employee's trust in senior management and also management effectiveness.

United Community Credit Union has nearly 50 employees and over 10,000 member-owners. The credit union was established in 1950 to serve local educators and today has over $85 million in assets.
