Two Cornerstone Credit Union League-affiliated credit unions in Houston, Texas have earned a spot on the Houston Chronicles’ Top Workplace list. With 134 employees and $470 million in assets, First Service CU earned 13th place in the small with 149 or less local workers. The Houston Chronicle named Shell FCU the 20th Top Workplace in midsize companies [150 – 499 local workers]. This is the third year for Shell FCU to make the list.

More than 68,000 Houston-area employees were surveyed from 285 companies to compile the 2013 top 150 companies in three categories: small 149 or less local workers; midsize with 150-499 local workers, and large with 500+ workers. Top Workplaces recognizes outstanding Houston-area businesses based on employee surveys. Companies are measured on several qualities by their employees such as opportunities for advancement, the value of their pay, benefits and their bosses’ communication and management skills.

One First Service CU employee wrote, “I am able to expand and learn different areas of the company. I am not confined within my work title. I love the flexibility and assistance that the company provides.” Another First Service CU employee said, “I am learning more skills. The environment is positive, motivating and encouraging. I enjoy the people I work with. I get to do what I love to do.” And one other employee commented about the positive environment, citing “greater opportunity for personal and professional growth.”

In the 2013 survey, a SFCU employee answered the question, “I love my job because …” with “I get to help people and make their lives easier.”

Shell FCU says it knows the importance of “people helping people” and has embedded it in their employees. Continuously giving back to its communities, Shell FCU has provided financial assistance and community outreach to thousands. With positive support, interest rate reduction and debt consolidation, SFCU has helped individuals pay off debt and start saving.
