Two A+ FCU Students Named Riverbat Savings Challenge Co-Champions
Friday, April 26, 2013 7:35 AM

A+ FCU (A+FCU), in partnership with Austin Community College Student Life (ACC), has selected winners for its first ever Riverbat Savings Challenge. Over the past six months, the five contestants attended workshops and coffee chats, wrote blog posts, and worked hard to reach their individual financial goals.

Crystle Castro and Brooke Deitrick have been selected as the Riverbat Savings Challenge Co-Champions and will both receive a $2,000 grand prize. The judges faced a tough choice between Castro and Deitrick and decided they both deserved to win.

Castro’s financial goal was to pay down her debt and over the course of six months, she paid off over $9,000. The judges were impressed with her dedication to the challenge and to getting her whole family involved.

Deitrick’s financial goal was to pay off the remaining $20,000 of her $90,000 student loan debt. By following a strict budget and meeting regularly with an A+ Financial Coach, she achieved her goal a month early.

Each of the five contestants reached their financial goals and will receive a cash prize:

  • First place: Crystle Castro and Brooke Deitrick, $2,000 each
  • Third place: Joy Eguavoen, $1,000
  • Fourth place: Oscar Contreras, $500
  • Fifth place: Ulises Garcia, $250

The winners were announced at ACC Student Life’s Nite in the Life on April 24, 2013.

A+ FCU says it is dedicated to providing the communities it serves with free financial education resources and remains committed to the belief that learning smart money skills is important every step of the way.
