TruService Community FCU Executive Prepares for Internship in Brazil
Monday, January 6, 2014 6:45 AM

Tiffany Greenway, branch operations manager with TruService Community FCU in Little Rock, Ark., is packing her bags and getting her travel documents in order. She is one of seven credit union executives from the Cornerstone Credit Union League region to be heading off to Brazil this weekend. Greenway was selected to participate in a two-week credit union internship in Brazil. This opportunity has been made possible because of a grant the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) secured from the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, a division of the United States Department of State.

From Jan. 12-25, Greenway and 11 other U.S. credit union executives will spend two weeks interning alongside foreign credit union colleagues at Sicredi – one of the most important cooperatives in Brazil - to find solutions to similar challenges. They will learn firsthand how to better serve an increasingly diverse membership, including youth and low-income members. They’ll have the opportunity to exchange ideas, improve problem-solving skills, and enhance cultural diversity while experiencing the “ins and outs” of credit unions abroad.

Greenway has served the members of TruService Community FCU for four years. The credit union hosted an executive from Sicredi last fall, and Greenway says that experience ignited her passion to want to learn more about Sicredi.

“While our Sicredi intern was at TruService, we talked a lot about their structure and their culture. I was so impressed with how they leverage the cooperative business model,” Greenway said. “I am looking forward to learning more about their system and how they have been able to achieve such success.”

As a branch operations manager, Greenway says she would also like to learn how Sicredi, with a presence in 11 states and more than 120 credit unions under the Sicredi umbrella, is able to maintain such high operational efficiency.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for me to be exposed to another credit union system, and I’m confident that the experience and knowledge I gain while interning at Sicredi will be of value to our members at TruService,” added Greenway.

Greenway will be joined by six other credit union executives chosen from Cornerstone-affiliated credit unions, including:

  • Valarie Brittain, CY Fair FCU
  • Nancy M. Croix Stroud, First Class American CU
  • Joey Griffith, Communication FCU
  • Terry McCoy, Amplify Credit Union
  • Taylor Richardson, Amplify Credit Union
  • Karl Wasserleben, Tinker FCU

In order to be selected for the January internship program, our credit union executives had to:

  • Demonstrate personal commitment and the ability to significantly influence their credit union.
  • Show leadership and entrepreneurial skills and demonstrate how personal initiative has contributed to their credit union’s development.
  • Exhibit potential to advance the national or international credit union system.
  • Be actively involved as an employee or board member of a credit union or organization affiliated with World Council through the Credit Union National Association or a state credit union league.
  • Have a career trajectory within the credit union industry.

In addition to completing an application, our credit union executives had to pass an interview with World Council staff.

Through WOCCU, Cornerstone signed a “People to People” partnership with Sicredi in 2010.
