Tomorrow is #DontTaxTuesday, CUs Encouraged to 'Tweet'
Monday, February 24, 2014 7:00 AM

Tomorrow is #DontTaxTuesday, and for those unsure about what to tweet, the Cornerstone Credit Union League offers the following suggestions:

  • A tax on credit unions is a tax on me! #DontTaxMyCU [insert lawmaker's twitter handle]
  • Don’t tax my credit union! #DontTaxMyCU [insert lawmaker's twitter handle]
  • Credit unions help/serve ordinary people. Taxing CUs will put CUs out of biz. #DontTaxMyCU [insert lawmaker's twitter handle]
  • Credit union members are equal owners in the CUs they belong to. #DontTaxMyCU [insert lawmaker's twitter handle]
  • Credit unions: One member, one vote. #DontTaxMyCU [insert lawmaker's twitter handle]
  • 9.5 million-consumers in Arkansas, Texas & Oklahoma are credit union members. Don’t Tax CUs. #DontTaxMyCU [insert lawmaker's twitter handle]
  • 96 million Americans belong to credit unions. Protect CU tax exemption. #DontTaxMyCU [insert lawmaker's twitter handle]

If you think tax reform isn't going anywhere in Congress, it's important to understand that Rep. Dave Camp, chairman of the House Ways and Means committee and top Republican tax writer, intends to release his long-awaited proposal to revamp the tax code as early as next week. You can read more about it at CUNA and on The Camp memo said now is the time to pursue a tax overhaul in the interest of boosting the economy, and he added, "We simply cannot afford the business-as-usual mentality that keeps Washington comfortable but complacent."

#DontTaxTuesday is a major grassroots event using social media channels to send Congress the loud and clear message:  "Don't Tax My Credit Union!" And it's the perfect time to leverage the message, while our credit union leaders are in Washington, DC, at the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference and meeting with legislators.

We would love to beat last September's #DontTaxTuesday stats, where we collectively sent more than 5,000 tweets and made 600 Facebook posts—more than double our results from the first campaign the previous July. In September, potentially more than one million Twitter users were exposed to the "Don't Tax My Credit Union" campaign and, perhaps nearly as meaningful, awareness of credit unions was raised across the country.

#DontTaxTuesday is an all-day affair, so be ready to jump in with your tweets, Facebook posts, Vine and YouTube videos, and any other social media outlets at your disposal. You can even send the message the "old-fashioned" way, via email. Watch for more details during the coming days on how you can participate in this fun and important event.
