The Opportunity Network, Share Best Practices; Learn from Industry Experts Just a Few Reasons to Attend Volunteers Forum
Friday, May 9, 2014 6:30 AM

The opportunity to network with volunteers from credit unions in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas;  share best practices; explore future trends, and learn from industry experts are just a handful of reasons to attend the Cornerstone Credit Union League’s Volunteers Forum June 10-12 in Little Rock, Ark.

While this two-day program is geared towards board of directors, supervisory and audit committees, as well as other committee members, credit union CEOs, CFOs and members of a credit union’s management team will also find value in this conference.

Attendees at this year’s conference can take advantage of a pre-conference workshop with Chad Stanislav and Howard Bufe of Credit Union Resources. Stanislav is presenting “Duties & Responsibilities – Understanding Your Role as a Supervisory Committee & Audit Committee Member” and Bufe’s session is “Understanding Your Role as a Board Member.” Additional information on the pre-conference workshop is available online.

Opening this year’s conference is Frank Keck, the People Whisperer, who will present “Surviving and Thriving in Change.” This high-energy and engaging session will help the credit union audience learn how to handle change emotionally, mentally and physically so that they know what they can control, understand what they cannot control (and why), and how to handle both so they stay positive, focused and an asset to their respective credit unions.

Other general sessions include:

The 10 Disciplines of Exceptionally Strategic CUs
Jeff Rendel, Rising Above Enterprises

In an environment where internal essentials, external influences, and stakeholder commitments draw your credit union in numerous directions, strategic discipline is the singular practice that holds your credit union on course. Strategic assessment and discipline is the underpinning for constructing matchless approaches to expand member loyalty, increase profits, and safeguard long-term sustainability. In this session, Rendel will examine among other things the strategic discipline he says is a “must have” to advance your credit union to the highpoint of continuing success.

CU Directors: Back to the Basics on Fiduciary Duties
Mike Blalack, Blalack & Williams, P.C.

Regulatory expectations for credit union directors have never been higher. In this fast paced session, credit union attorney Mike Blalack will provide directors with a basic foundation for understanding their fiduciary duties and responsibilities and then also provide practical recommendations on how directors can actually fulfill those fiduciary duties and responsibilities.

A Higher Purpose: Why CUs are Different than Banks
Tim Harrington, T.E.A.M. Resources

What makes us different than banks?  We can say it’s our not-for-profit status, or that we’re co-operatively owned and democratically controlled.  But it is something much more than that.  It is because we make our work a higher purpose. Credit Unions need profit and capital, but that isn’t why we exist.  We exist to serve.  That is fundamentally different than the purpose of banks.  And our members trust us because of it. This inspirational presentation shares principles lying behind successful organizations.

Attendees can also take advantage of a wealth of educational breakout sessions, including:
