The ABCs of Consumer Lending

Learn the ABCs of Consumer Lending at June Seminars

Many employees who accept loan applications or discuss loan options don't have the self-confidence to work with members. And though anyone can fill in blanks on a computer screen, an untrained employee may not understand the system or program they're working in, and, as a result, the ability of those employees to engender trust is compromised.

When working with loan requests, it's to a credit union's detriment when employees proceed haphazardly—largely through no fault of their own. Training is the key. Credit union managers must ask some basic questions, such as:

  • Are your lenders going through the motions and just filling in boxes in a lending program as they appear on their computer screen when processing a loan?
  • Do they understand why the information they are filling in is needed or being asked?
  • If the “system” was not working, could they process a loan in a professional manner, or would you hear them say, “Our system is down, can you come back later?”
  • Do they understand what the lending program is doing or calculating and what the calculations mean?
  • With the concern for lenders having incentives, do your lenders know what to say and not say?

If you answered “no” to any of those questions, here's a solution: get your lenders to take the ABCs of Lending program, an interactive, hands-on consumer lending program that gives them a clear understanding of how to discuss and analyze loan applications with members. Having this understanding will not only improve member service, it will build the employee's confidence—something quality lenders must have.
