Texas Legislature Moving Forward in Special Session as Governor Expands the Call
Friday, July 21, 2017 6:55 AM

The Legislature began its first special session on July 18, 2017. The Texas Senate has approved S.B. 20 by Sen. Van Taylor (R-Plano) that will allow five Texas state agencies, subject to Sunset review and possible elimination, to continue operating.  The Governor called the Legislature into special session to continue the operation of these agencies through the 2019 Legislative session.

The Sunset bills for several agencies were not approved by the legislature during the 85th Regular Session. Without legislative authorization, these five state agencies would face elimination on September 1, 2017.

S.B. 20 extends the Sunset provisions for these agencies from September 1, 2017, to September 1, 2019. Once the Senate passed the extension for these agencies at 1am Thursday morning, the Governor expanded the call with nearly twenty issues. The TXCUA is monitoring these bills for any changes to the TCUD Sunset provisions or anything that may impact credit unions. While none of the issues that the Governor added to the call are anticipated to specifically impact credit unions, there are several issues that could have unintended consequences, so the TXCUA will be monitoring the process.  See the full list of items on the call here.
