Texas Legislators Meet with Credit Union Leaders
Friday, December 19, 2014 6:55 AM

At the heart of political engagement is the relationship between credit union leaders and their legislators. Not only does the relationship serve the credit union, but all credit unions benefit.

The Sabine Federal Credit Union board and staff enjoyed a visit with Sen. Robert Nichols (TX-District 3) recently in its Orange, Texas, office.

The credit union assembly, including Sabine FCU President/CEO David Meaux and Texas Credit Union Association President Jeff Huffman, discussed credit unions and the work they are doing to help local economic development, local area issues, and the senator's recent reelection and committee work.

"The meeting went very well," said Meaux. "We have met with Sen. Nichols several times in the past and will continue to meet with him and his staff to build our relationship. He understands our industry, is very knowledgeable, and is a valuable contact."

The group plans to continue its political engagement activities in Orange and intends to meet with Sen. Nichols again in Austin at the Texas Governmental Affairs Conference, which takes place in February.

"Sen. Nichols has a passion for Orange and is very open," said Meaux. "He's willing to visit and support businesses and events in this area. He is also willing to visit with us here at our credit union and listen to our issues and requests."

Texas Trust Credit Union

Rep. Rodney Anderson (R-Grand Prairie) recently visited Texas Trust Credit Union to meet with CEO Jim Minge, Board Chair Larry Skinner, and EVP/Chief Retail Officer Willy Kelsey. Texas Credit Union Association President Jeff Huffman was also in attendance and reported a very productive meeting where participants discussed the credit union, the primary and general election, and the upcoming legislative session.

Rep. Anderson has been a member of Texas Trust CU since he was 12 years old, when his father brought him in to open an account (then, it was the LTV Credit Union). During the meeting, lots of stories were shared about the history and development of Texas Trust and its role in Grand Prairie's growth. Rep. Anderson recalled when Texas Trust CU was the only financial institution in that part of Grand Prairie at one time.

During the course of the meeting, Rep. Anderson looked up in surprise and said, "There's my mom!" She had just finished taking care of some business at the credit union.
