Telco Plus Offers CU-4 Dose of Reality to High School Students
Tuesday, December 2, 2014 7:00 AM

Telco Plus Credit Union joined the ranks of other REAL Solutions credit unions in offering a special "CU-4 dose" of reality to local high school students. The CU-4 Reality Fair is a unique opportunity for young people to experience some of the financial challenges they will face when they start life on their own.

On Nov. 11, 2014, Telco Plus’s Reality Fair gave more than 250 Kilgore High School students in Gregg County, Texas, the hands-on experience of living within a monthly budget while paying for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and food. Students were tempted to stray from their budgets with some of the not-so-basic options, like entertainment, electronics, pets, and other miscellaneous expenses.

This was the first year Telco Plus put on the Reality Fair at Kilgore ISD, and by all accounts, it was a huge success. The students, teachers, and staff at Kilgore ISD were thrilled that the Telco Plus employees and board of directors came on their day off to help the students go through the program.

“We love doing the Fair for the students," said Betty DeWeese, CEO of Telco Plus. "Telco Plus, like all credit unions, believes in giving back to the community through donations, time, and education to ensure a better future for all of us.”

The CU 4 Reality Fairs are part of Cornerstone's REAL Solutions initiative. They are a great way for credit unions to reach out to their local communities, teach the importance of financial literacy, and strengthen member relations.

REAL Solutions Director Paula Upchurch said, "It was great working with the staff at Telco Plus as they provided this unique financial education opportunity to the students at Kilgore ISD. Financial literacy is such an important gift to share with the community, and it is our wish that the students take this learning experience with them when they go off to college and afterward when they begin raising families of their own."
