Tarrant County's CU to Host Reality Fair at Uplift Academy
Monday, September 18, 2017 6:45 AM

Fort Worth's Tarrant County’s Credit Union will host their first Reality Fair at Uplift Academy in Renaissance Heights on Wednesday, Sept. 20.

The Reality Fair is a hands-on event for the 98 high school juniors and 38 high school seniors of the Academy, with the objective of familiarizing them with real-world financial situations. The fair will be filled with engaging activities and financial roleplaying to provide the students—many of whom live in underserved communities—with real life scenarios and solutions to life’s setbacks and successes.

“I think any time you can provide financial education in a fun environment, you will see students get engaged," said TCCU VP of Operations Shelli McCoy. "For TCCU to bring this type of learning to a community with a cycle of poverty, the benefits are magnified!”

The Reality Fair is a part of McCoy’s, year-long DE project focused on a revitalization project in southeast Fort Worth. McCoy has arranged for the Fair to be facilitated by Paula Upchurch, director of Real Solutions for Cornerstone Credit Union League.

Twenty volunteers will be in attendance to help guide students through the fair. The volunteers are staff from other credit unions and credit union partners, including Resource One Credit Union, Texas People Federal Credit Union, Unity One Credit Union, and Liberty Mutual Insurance.

TCCU is excited to host the first Reality Fair for the students of the Academy, providing them with financial education and resources to strengthen them for the future ahead.
