“Going to work at a credit union was the best decision I ever made,” Tabitha Lewton, culture and communications specialist with AMOCO FCU told her credit union peers yesterday during a special award ceremony at a joint session of the Marketing & Business Development Conference and the Leadership Conference & Expo in San Antonio.

Lewton was chosen as this year’s Marketing & Business Development Professional of the Year. Kenny Harrington, chair of the Cornerstone Credit Union League’s Awards & Recognition Committee, presented the award to a surprised Lewton. Although Lewton knew she had been nominated, she was unaware that she had won.

“This is such a surprise,” she told the audience.

Lewton is credited with enhancing the credit union’s brand through business development and marketing. She helped coordinated a very successful membership drive, “iheartAMOCO.” The membership drive had several elements, and as a result, the credit union gained a number of new SEGs into their field of membership.

Of course we all know that just because you gained a SEG doesn’t mean you gained a member. Lewton was also challenged with developing an initiative that would help increase membership penetration, and grow loans. She implemented a successful campaign that generated 36 loans totaling close to $1 million in loans booked. This campaign was called “Together We Can.”

And in addition to these two initiatives, Lewton developed a communication strategy to help raise awareness and generate support for a very important program, Rachel’s Challenge. Implemented in schools across the country, Rachel’s Challenge is helping to combat bulling in schools.
