On April 21, the local Oklahoma City community came together for the 5th annual Sugar and Spurs event and raised $32,273 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The night featured the Aaron Woods Band along with a photo booth, auction, door prizes, and a wine pull. Guests devoured sugary samplings from District House Coffee, The Faculty House, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Perk Place, and Simply Falafel, to name a few. They also chomped down on George’s Happy Hog pulled-pork sandwiches while sipping Anthem beer.

At the tender age of nine, the Love’s Champion Child Samantha Lancaster took the stage and spoke to the group about her battles with Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia. These conditions are just as scary as they sound. Chiari Malformation is a congenital defect in the back of the head where the cerebellum part of the brain hangs into the spinal cord. Syringomyelia is a disorder in which a cyst forms within the spinal cord due to the restricted flow of spinal fluid.

Samantha’s health issues have resulted in multiple surgeries over the last three years and prevent her from participating in many physical activities. Samantha hopes that one day soon doctors will discover a cure. Until then, she enjoys singing, drama, and Girl Scouts.

“We are thrilled with the continued success of Sugar and Spurs each year. Knowing that all of the money stays right here locally to help kids like Samantha,” said Mark W. Kelly, OECU president/CEO. “The outpouring of support from our community to support Oklahoma’s sick kids has been overwhelming.”

Children’s Hospital Foundation, proud affiliate of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, is a nonprofit 501c (3) organization in Oklahoma striving to improve the health of children.
