Strong International CU Language Included in Appropriations Bill
Tuesday, July 25, 2017 6:45 AM

Last week, the House Appropriations Committee considered the Fiscal Year 2018 State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act.  The legislation passed the Committee by a vote of 30-22.

The bill's report contains strong support for international credit unions. The bill also contains $12 million for the Cooperative Development Program at the U.S. Agency for International Development. At the end of June, Credit Union National Association and the World Council of Credit Unions wrote to House and Senate appropriators to push for international credit support. The final bill included language that was stronger than the language recommended by CUNA and WOCCU.

“The Committee directs the USAID Administrator to consult with the Committees on Appropriations on cooperative development programs for financial systems including how the U.S. Agency for International Development is complying with the requirements of 22 U.S.C. § 2151i(2),” the report reads.

WOCCU receives partial funding through USAID programs to further its mission to, “Reduce Poverty through Sustainable Community Based Financing of Private Entrepreneurship and Agriculture.” CUNA and WOCCU were greatly appreciative of the work done by Rep. Tom Rooney (R-FL) who fought to include the language in the bill report and applauded the committee for their continued support.
