Special Elections to Fill Texas House Seats in San Antonio and Houston
Tuesday, April 26, 2016 7:05 AM

Special elections will be held on May 7 to fill the remaining terms of two Texas House members who retired before their terms were over.

Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon from District 120 in San Antonio retired shortly after the end of the legislative session in 2015. The candidates for her seat are Latronda Darnell, a former staffer for McClendon; Lou Miller, an insurance agent and community volunteer; marketer Chris Dawkins; and freelance writer Laura Thompson.

Rep. Sylvester Turner retired after being elected mayor of Houston in the fall of 2015. Former Houston City Council member Jarvis Johnson and educator Rickey "RayKey" Tezino are the candidates to replace him in District 139.

The winners of the special elections will hold the office until the end of 2016. Early voting runs through Tuesday, May 3.
