Skimming Attacks at ATMs Reach Record Numbers
Tuesday, May 3, 2016 6:35 AM

In the U.S. and Europe, ATM skimming attacks are on the rise, according to a recent article posted on Krebs on Security. It’s an issue at the forefront for FICO Card Alert Service’s fraud-tracking service, which recorded a 546 percent increase in ATM skimming attacks from 2014 to 2015, as reported in early April. That number is the highest ever recorded.

According to fraud expert Brian Krebs, “Earlier this year, I published a post about skimming attacks targeting non-bank ATMs using hidden cameras and skimming devices plugged into the ATM network cables to intercept customer card data.

“While 2014 saw skimming attacks targeting mainly banks in big cities on the east and west coasts of the United States, last year’s skimming attacks were far more spread out across the country, the FICO report noted.”

The immediate solution might still be low-tech consumer intervention. Covering the number pad when keying in a PIN prevents the camera recording that information for would-be criminals. A stat in Verizon‘s new Data Breach Investigations Report released recently bears this out: According to Verizon, more than 90 percent of the breaches in the report last year involving skimmers used a tiny hidden camera to steal the PIN.
