Shell FCU Announces 2016 John Garrison Scholarship Award Winners
Wednesday, June 22, 2016 6:55 AM

Shell Federal Credit Union extends the John Garrison Scholarship Award to graduating high school seniors each year. Recipients are selected based upon academic performance, communal involvement, extracurricular activities, and response to the application essay. This year’s essay contest asked applicants to explain the difference between a bank and a credit union, as well as why a young adult would use a credit union over a bank for their financial needs.

More than 70 applications were submitted for the 2016 John Garrison Scholarship from 29 different high schools throughout Harris County. Ten deserving high school seniors were selected as recipients for the award, each of whom will be awarded $2,500 to the college, university, or vocational-technical school of choice.

Scholarship recipients follow, along with the college of their choice for fall 2016.

Hannah Jones of Clear Horizons Early College High School: Texas A&M University.
Miguel Serrano of La Porte High School: University of Texas-Austin.
Navya Sankoorikkal of Cypress Woods High School: Brown University.
Ashlyn Campo of Deer Park High School: Blinn College.
Trevor Ruffaner of Clear Horizons Early College High School: Lamar University.
Lacia Engels of Deer Park High School: Texas A&M University.
Lauren Taylor of Deer Park High School: Texas A&M University.
Candice Johnson of Deer Park High School: Texas A&M University.
Montserrat Tijerina of Pasadena Memorial High School: University of Chicago.
Shalini Lakshmi of Alvin High School: University of Houston.

Since 2000, Shell FCU has awarded 98 students with the John Garrison Scholarship award for a total of $237,500. The scholarship was established in memory of John Garrison, a dedicated volunteer board member for more than 50 years. His vision and volunteer spirit are still inspirations to us all. Our hope is that applicants will embrace that same spirit and carry it forward into their careers and volunteerism.

Committed to its communities, Shell FCU has improved the lives of thousands through service excellence, community outreach, and lasting financial solutions for all stages of life since 1937. Anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Harris County can bank with the credit union. To learn more, please visit sfcuilife.org.
