Seven CU Execs from Cornerstone Region Selected to Participate in January 2014 Internship in Brazil
Thursday, October 24, 2013 8:45 AM

The Cornerstone Credit Union League (Cornerstone) has learned that seven executives from Cornerstone-affiliated credit unions have been chosen to participate in a two-week credit union internship in Brazil. This opportunity has been made possible because of a grant the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) secured from the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, a division of the United States Department of State.

A total of 12 U.S. credit union executives were selected to participate in the Jan. 12-25 internship program in Brazil – seven of whom are from the Cornerstone region. The credit union executives will spend two weeks interning alongside foreign credit union colleagues at Sicredi – one of the most important cooperatives in Brazil - to find solutions to similar challenges. They will learn firsthand how to better serve an increasingly diverse membership, including youth and low-income members. They’ll have the opportunity to exchange ideas, improve problem-solving skills, and enhance cultural diversity while experiencing the “ins and outs” of credit unions abroad.

The seven credit union executives chosen from Cornerstone-affiliated credit unions include:

  • Valarie Brittain, CY Fair FCU
  • Nancy M. Croix Stroud, First Class American CU
  • Tiffany Greenway, TruService Community FCU
  • Joey Griffith, Communication FCU
  • Terry McCoy, Amplify Credit Union
  • Taylor Richardson, Amplify Credit Union
  • Karl Wasserleben, Tinker FCU

The January 2014 internship includes:

  • Credit union internship placement
  • Lodging with a local host family
  • Meal and communication stipends
  • Local transportation Traveler’s insurance

Participants are responsible for their own airfare. In order to be selected for the January internship program, our credit union executives had to:

  • Demonstrate personal commitment and the ability to significantly influence their credit union.
  • Show leadership and entrepreneurial skills and demonstrate how personal initiative has contributed to their credit union’s development.
  • Exhibit potential to advance the national or international credit union system.
  • Be actively involved as an employee or board member of a credit union or organization affiliated with World Council through the Credit Union National Association or a state credit union league.
  • Have a career trajectory within the credit union industry.

In addition to completing an application, our credit union executives had to pass an interview with World Council staff.

Through WOCCU, Cornerstone signed a “People to People” partnership with Sicredi in 2010.
