Board Chair C. Jean Thorp of Scott & White Employees Credit Union (SWECU) has announced the Retirement of CEO Gary L. Janacek, effective April 1, 2017. Celeste Boyd Kaylor will succeed Janacek as CEO on April 1, 2017.

Janacek's financial services career has spanned more than 46 years, 39 of which was as CEO of SWECU. He's a native of Temple, Texas, and a graduate of the Southwest CUNA Management School at the University of Houston.

Thorp said on behalf of the credit union, “I congratulate Gary on his upcoming retirement. He’s had a distinguished career and is an outstanding leader who has led our organization and the credit union movement to new and greater heights. Thirty-nine years ago we made the right decision in hiring him, at the age of 26, to lead us into the future. It’s been a marvelous pleasure working with him.”

Janacek epitomizes the credit union philosophy of “people helping people,” having served in numerous leadership positions within the state and national credit union movement, and his community.

Credit Union House and Cornerstone Credit Union League inducted Janacek into the Credit Union House Hall of Leaders in 2015.

"Gary Janacek has proven to be an exceptional leader in the credit union movement," said Cornerstone President/CEO Dick Ensweiler. "Whether it be at the chapter level, league level, national level, or the Credit Union Commission for the State of Texas, Gary has not only served well, but has risen through the ranks and been selected to chair those organizations."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry appointed Janacek to serve on the Texas Credit Union Commission in September 2003. He was appointed chairman in January 2004 and received a second appointment as chairman in May 2009.

"Gary is passionate about credit unions and their purpose, and he's kept that commitment to the well-being of members as his guiding light while he helped steer organizations through difficult and challenging times," said Ensweiler. "The credit union movement in the Cornerstone region and throughout the country will miss his leadership, and we wish him well in retirement.

Janacek formally announced his retirement to the board of directors and staff in late summer 2016. “It’s been a distinct privilege and honor to serve our members for the past 39 years," he said. "I have been richly blessed with a visionary board of directors and dedicated staff in serving the needs of our membership. I am confident that SWECU is positioned for continued strategic growth in product and service delivery under the leadership of our new CEO.”

"We're delighted that Celeste Boyd Kaylor will take Gary's place," Ensweiler said. "We at Cornerstone offer Celeste our congratulations and our support as she leads the credit union into the future."

"We are so pleased that Celeste has accepted the CEO position," said Thorp. "Ms. Kaylor is a Temple native, having graduated from Temple High School and Temple College, and she holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance from the University of North Texas. Over the past 14 years, Ms. Kaylor has held a number of management positions in the financial services industry, most recently with Bank of America. Celeste has a great work ethic, is dedicated to helping people, and is enthusiastic about the future. We have every confidence that she will lead SWECU honorably as we continue the legacy of providing personalized professional service to our members and community we serve.”
