An icon in the credit union movement was honored last week during the 41st graduation ceremony of Southwest CUNA Management School.  After 37 years of involvement with the three-year program, Dr. Charles Idol is retiring as a faculty member. Cornerstone Credit Union League’s Debbie Rightmire presented Dr. Idol a clock, which he accepted in front of an audience clearly appreciative of his service to SCMS.

Upon accepting the recognition, Dr. Idol remarked that the greatest achievement a teacher can have is to see students advance.

“SCMS is truly a management school. I’ve seen SCMS graduates go on to become CFOs and CEOs,” noted Idol. “And for a teacher, nothing is more gratifying than to see your students succeed.”

Dr. Idol has been involved in the credit union movement since 1975, serving as a credit union director and providing credit unions and their professional associations with consulting, research, and educational services in the areas of asset/liability management (ALM) and investments. He has conducted seminars for CUNA, CUES, NCUA, NASCUS, AICPA, state credit union regulatory agencies, and over 30 credit union leagues. Dr. Idol has also written and marketed several ALM software packages. He served as a chief economist for a number of organizations, including the Texas Credit Union League (now Cornerstone Credit Union League and Southwest Corporate FCU (now Catalyst Corporate FCU).

“Dr. Idol is a highly recognized and respected figure in the credit union movement,” says Rightmire. “He has also been an integral part of SCMS and we will miss his insight and wisdom.”
