SCMS Accepting First-Year Enrollments

Southwest CUNA Management School (SCMS), the three-year educational program designed to develop and enhance leadership skills for credit union professionals, is accepting first-year enrollments.

SCMS provides an exceptional forum for networking with other credit union professionals; access to top industry experts; and the opportunity to ignite an inner passion and vision for personal and professional growth.

To understand why SCMS is so highly regarded among credit unions the world over, one only has to look at their distinguished faculty—seasoned professionals all—and that's just for starters.

Dr. Robert Smith, interim chancellor of The University of Tennessee at Martin and president emeritus of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, will return to SCMS for his 31st year of providing exemplary training. Smith is a recognized specialist in executive leadership, teaching in three other university executive development programs across the nation, as well as serving "of counsel" to Witt/Kieffer, one of the 10 largest executive placement firms in the U.S., and an associate with AASCU-Penson Center for Professional Development, a national consulting firm serving presidents of colleges and universities. 

Dr. Bob, as he is called, teaches two courses at SCMS:

  • Passion, Purpose, and Performance: How Innovative Leadership Works in Today's Credit Union
  • Developing Oral Communication Skills for the Credit Union Executive (summer and mid-year courses)

Dr. Bob has received four national awards for teaching or leadership education. He has provided leadership development and strategic thinking for more than 120,000 business people, including his clients: Major League Baseball Players Alumni, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, IBM, Boeing Military, Lear Jet, Pizza Hut International, and more than 200 financial institutions.

Because the SCMS faculty and the educational program are so highly regarded, credit unions can rest assured their investment will pay off many times over for their employees and the credit union.

According to SCMS Director Janine McBee, graduating from the program is challenging, as well as rewarding. "SCMS students are challenged to think globally, seeing their individual credit union through the eyes of the CEO," McBee said. "Faculty bring real world experience and challenges to the classroom. They don’t teach to a test. Instead, faculty are tasked with making students uncomfortable with the status quo, imagining what the future could look like for their credit unions. As students work through the curriculum, they strategically apply the concepts they’ve learned toward the development of a detailed two-year business plan focused on their credit union."
