San Antonio Federal CU Shines at CUNA Tech Council Conference
Tuesday, October 14, 2014 7:00 AM

San Antonio Federal Credit Union (SACU) received the 2014 Excellence in Technology Award from the Credit Union National Association Technology Council for creation of a new kiosk technology that provides real-time cashless transactions for members. The kiosk was the result of a 12-month initiative to identify and implement a previously non-existent solution to enhance member convenience in the branch environment.

SACU, a $2.8 billion credit union headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, serves 250,000 members in 43 states across the United States. The credit union sought to implement an in-branch kiosk that integrated touch-screen and card scanning technology with the printing and emailing of documents to allow members to conduct cashless transactions in real time. When the credit union found no such technology existed in the financial services industry, it looked to hotel and retail kiosks as a model to develop an interface and operating system that could be used in its own branches and by other credit unions.

The time and money saving technology offers a convenient and secure way for members to perform transactions such as: viewing account balances and history; transferring money between accounts; making loan and credit card payments; renewing share certificates; checking current rates; and placing stop payments. When performed using the kiosk, these transactions have no service fees and eliminate a member’s need to see a teller or account representative.

The kiosk is currently in place at SACU's De Zavala location, 12840 West IH-10, with plans to add five more at various locations throughout San Antonio in the coming year.

SACU received the award from CUNA's Technology Council, a national network comprised of more than 750 credit union technology experts across the United States. The award was received in the Member Service/Convenience category, recognizing an outstanding approach to technology challenges with potential for universal application to other credit unions. Award winners were recognized at the CUNA Technology Council's 19th Annual Conference held Sept. 21-24 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
