Retailer Claims Spur CUNA to Step Up 'Stop the Data Breaches' Activity
Monday, May 23, 2016 6:40 AM

In response to some of the more egregious claims made recently by certain retailers on data security, Credit Union National Association is planning a coordinated campaign with other financial services trades, to include the ABA, the ICBA, the Financial Services Roundtable, among others in Washington.

The campaign will coincide with the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) fly-in this week, May 23-25. This campaign will consist of targeted digital communications to Capitol Hill based on geographic location and cookie tracking. These tools will direct users to a landing website which will include comprehensive information about data security legislation H.R. 2205 and S. 961. The campaign will likely take a “myth versus fact” approach to rebutting various claims CUNA expects the NRF to make to policymakers and staff on the Hill regarding the need for enhanced data security standards for merchants.

In addition to this collaboration, CUNA will be conducting grassroots activities through its social media platforms using the hashtag #StopTheDataBreaches. Credit unions are encouraged to send their advocates to so they can contact their legislators in support of H.R. 2205 and S. 961.

CUNA and Cornerstone are on the offensive as the retailers spread their propaganda. The collaboration of six financial trades represents the credit union movement's willingness to work together when it is beneficial for consumers. If you have questions, please contact Jim Phelps, SVP advocacy, at 469-385-6481, or 800-442-5762, ext. 6481, or by email at
