Resource One CU—Snapshot of an Activated CU:ROAR Team
Friday, June 19, 2015 7:00 AM

One of the hallmarks of CU:ROAR, Cornerstone's signature grassroots and advocacy program for credit unions, is the ability to mobilize support around a specific issue. That responsiveness is particularly important when the legislatures are in session and a bill comes up that may affect the way credit unions conduct business.

During the last month of the Texas session, Cornerstone issued several calls to action specifically requesting CU:ROAR teams and other employees to contact their lawmakers. Resource One Credit Union in Dallas was one of many who immediately activated their team.

Resource One Political Advocacy Coordinator Cleo Segovia said, "We have always prided ourselves on being active in credit union political affairs. It is always a collaborative effort with the ROAR team to get staff to write as many letters as possible."

The Resource One team is on especially high alert when sessions are in. They have a team of seven, including Segovia and Phillip Crocker. "Each member is assigned to a particular region to help the cause," Segovia said. "Either Phillip or I notify the ROAR team when there are calls to action."

Segovia noted that there is some time and energy involved in constructing an array of scripted responses. "Our staff just needed to select and choose their responses," he said, "which created more individualized responses from Resource One Credit Union."

The time and effort doesn't sway Segovia's opinion of the importance of engagement. "Over the years, we have been an impactful CU in regard to member advocacy and political engagement," he said. "

Segovia will be attending next week's Hike the Hill event in Washington, DC, and he noted that their political undertakings at home only underscore the importance of being active in advocacy affairs with their U.S. lawmakers.

Cornerstone Credit Union League Political and Grassroots Director April Krause said, "Resource One Credit Union consistently answers our calls to action, and as a result, they contribute to the larger impact we're able to make with Texas legislators on behalf of all credit unions. We commend Resource One for their responsiveness and their commitment to making a difference. Their team sets a great example for all grassroots activists, and we couldn't hope for a better, more effective partner in our advocacy efforts."
