Report: Oracle’s MIRCOS Point-of-Sale Systems Suffer Breach

Oracle’s MICROS point-of-sale credit card payment systems have suffered a data breach by a Russian cybercrime group, reports Krebs on Security. Per the report, attackers compromised a customer support portal for companies using MICROS.

Oracle’s MICROS is one of the top three point-of-sale vendors globally, estimated to be used at more than 330,000 cash registers, including 200,000 food and beverage outlets, 100,000 retail sites, and more than 30,000 hotels.

Oracle has acknowledged that it “detected and addressed malicious code in certain legacy MICROS systems,” and is asking all MICROS customers to reset their passwords for the MICROS online support portal.

CUNA and Cornerstone actively support legislation that would enact strict data security standards for entities that handle consumer information, as well as put in place a national data breach notification standard.

CUNA supports the Data Security Act of 2015, which has been introduced in the Senate (S. 961) by Sens. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), and in the House (H.R. 2205) by Reps. Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas) and John Carney (D-Del.).
