Rep. from Texas to Chair U.S. Ways and Means Committee
Thursday, November 5, 2015 7:00 AM

Rep. Kevin Brady

Rep. Kevin Brady from Texas (District 8) was selected Wednesday to serve as the new chairman of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, replacing Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), who is now speaker of the House.

Brady was selected for the committee chairmanship by the House Republican Conference’s Steering Committee. The selection is due to be ratified today by the full Republican Conference.

Ryan was sworn in last Thursday as House speaker after being elected with a 236-vote majority. He was chosen several weeks after former Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) announced his plans to resign in September.

Brady previously expressed his support for maintaining credit unions’ tax status, which is CUNA’s top advocacy priority. In 2013, with the House Ways and Means Committee examining tax reform, Brady was one of many high-ranking members of the committee to give statements in support of the credit union tax status.

In a meeting with Texas credit unions the same year, Brady called credit unions the “gold standard” when it comes to advocacy efforts.

Brady’s remarks came in the midst of CUNA’s “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” campaign, which saw hundreds of thousands of contacts made online with lawmakers, as well as engagement from stakeholders from more than 2,000 credit unions.
