Tim McAlpine

Southwest CUNA Management School (SCMS) has added an exciting new course and faculty member to the curriculum. Philosophy Is Good Business: Opportunities for Marketing and Growth features a dynamic and experienced instructor Tim McAlpine.

In his course, McAlpine goes in depth on the foundational concepts of credit unions:  the seven cooperative principles and the credit union difference. He presents real-life examples that illustrate how the credit union philosophy of "people helping people" is not just a trite slogan; it's good business practice—especially today when young adults are so focused on making alliances with companies that do good in the world. Credit unions fit that mold—we need to get the word out!

In this homogenous financial services marketplace, differentiation is absolutely key. Never has there been a better time to differentiate based on a philosophy that puts members first and aligns with the belief system of the next generation of credit union members.

SCMS students will learn:

  • How the credit union philosophy aligns with today's young adults' belief system.
  • Practical real-world ideas and examples of credit unions differentiating based on philosophy.
  • How credit unions can get involved in new economic drivers like the sharing economy and collaborative consumption.
  • How education can form a meaningful part of your credit union's outreach in the communities it serves.

Southwest CUNA Management School is a three-year educational program designed to develop and enhance leadership skills for credit union professionals. Students will find an exceptional forum for networking with other credit union professionals; access to top industry experts; and the opportunity to ignite an inner passion and vision for personal and professional growth. Credit unions can rest assured their investment will pay off many times over for their employees and the credit union.

Enrollment for the 2015 SCMS Summer Session (July 12-22) ends soon. Act now to join the excitement. Prospective students should visit for additional information.
