Red River FCU Helps Hero’s Pantry in Honor of Veterans Day
Tuesday, November 10, 2015 6:55 AM

Red River FCU Hero's PantryIn honor of Veterans Day, Red River Federal Credit Union employees are holding a food drive for Hero’s Pantry, which serves approximately 100 veterans per month who live in the areas of Ashdown, Hope, Simms, New Boston, and Maud.

The Employee Morale Committee at Red River Credit Union initiated a donation that consisted of 564 items, including 420 cans of a variety of meats, fruits, and vegetables; 66 boxes and bags of soups, cereals, rice, pasta, and similar food items; and several cases of water.

“The Employee Morale Committee wanted to do a fundraiser and food donation from our employees, and we decided to choose Hero’s Pantry, since it fell right before Veterans Day,” explained Red River Employee Morale Committee Chair Brittaney McGuire. "A few weeks ago, we were also allowed to wear jeans in conjunction with International Credit Union Day, and with that privilege, employees donated $3 toward our cash donations."

Red River Hero's PantryHero’s Pantry was created in 2010 by a nurse at the local Veterans Administration Clinic. But the pantry was only allowed at the clinic for six months, so Trinity Presbyterian Church stepped up and offered to host the program thereafter.

VA Clinic Director Wanda Majors said, “Many of our veterans who come in each month have told us that with their VA benefits and Social Security, by the third week of the month, they are very low on or out of groceries. Without Hero’s Pantry, many of these individuals may not have any food to last them the remainder of the month.”

“I’m very proud of our employees' support of the Hero’s Pantry,” said Red River SVP and retired Air Force veteran John Stephens.
